UltiMaker make professional dual-extrusion 3D printers, and they sit a clear step above a classroom machine. Where a school printer is built to be simple and safe, an UltiMaker is built to run repeatedly to a known tolerance — which is what a TAFE workshop, a university design faculty or a senior design and technology programme actually needs.
What dual extrusion gives you
Two materials in one print. Build in one material and print supports in another that dissolves away, so students can design overhangs and internal cavities a single-extruder machine can't produce.
Swappable print cores. Change nozzle size, or move to abrasive materials like carbon-fibre-filled filament, by clicking in a different core rather than dismantling a hot end.
An open filament system. Any 2.85mm material works, so a course isn't locked to one supplier's consumables.
The range
UltiMaker S5 — a 330 x 240 x 300mm build volume, dual extrusion, and a heated glass plate with active levelling. The established workhorse of the range.
UltiMaker S6 Flex — the current S-series model, for programmes specifying new hardware.
UltiMaker S8 and Factor 4 — larger and production-focused, available to order.
Worth knowing before you specify one
These are heavy benchtop machines. The S5 weighs 20.6kg and measures 495 x 585 x 780mm with the spool holder, so plan bench space and access.
Materials matter more than on a classroom printer. Nylon, polycarbonate and composites need the right print core and a settled workflow, not just a spool change.
If you want something simpler for general classroom use, our FlashForge range covers enclosed filament printers at a fraction of the cost.
