Green Screen Kits & Backdrops for Schools

A green screen turns a corner of the classroom into a television studio. Students report the weather, stand on the surface of Mars, interview a historical figure, or narrate a science explanation from inside a volcano. The technique is simple; what makes it work in a school is having the right gear and enough space to set it up quickly.

Buying the whole thing at once

Or building it up piece by piece

• Backdrop — the pop-up background folds away in seconds and suits a room that has to go back to being a classroom. A muslin backdrop is larger and hangs flat, which is better for a permanent or semi-permanent set-up.
• Background stand — holds the backdrop upright without taping it to a wall. The thing most schools forget until the day they film.
• Background clips — keep the fabric taut. Wrinkles in a green screen show up as shadows, and shadows break the effect.
• Softbox lighting — even light across the screen is what actually makes chroma key work. Classroom fluorescents almost never provide it.
• Light reflector — bounces light back onto the student so they are not lit only from one side

What else you will need

• A camera. Any of our webcams or visualisers will do the job, and a flexible-neck webcam is a practical choice because it can point at the set from an odd angle
• Editing software or an app that supports chroma key. Most schools already have one on their iPads or Chromebooks.
• Space. Roughly two metres between the student and the backdrop, so light does not spill and cast a shadow behind them.

The one mistake worth avoiding. Most green screen projects fail on lighting, not on the screen itself. A creased backdrop lit from a single overhead source will produce a green fringe around the student that no software can remove cleanly. Flat, even light on the screen matters more than the resolution of the camera.
