Cleaning filament clears out a print core without dismantling it. You push it through a hot nozzle and it carries away the residue left behind by the last material, which is what you want before switching from something abrasive or dark to something light-coloured, or when prints have started coming out patchy.

When a class needs it:
- After printing with a composite like PET CF, which leaves more behind than standard materials
- Before switching from a dark colour to white or transparent, where any residue shows
- When extrusion has become inconsistent and under-extrusion is showing in prints
A shared classroom printer benefits from a routine here. A core cleaned at the end of each term prints better and lasts longer than one cleaned when something has already gone wrong, and it is far cheaper than a replacement print core.
