UltiMaker Nylon is tough, slightly flexible and wears well, which makes it the material for moving parts. Gears, hinges, bushes, clips and anything that will be handled repeatedly last far longer in nylon than in PLA. It is strong without being brittle, so a part bends before it snaps.

Keep it dry. Nylon absorbs moisture from the air faster than any other common filament, and wet nylon prints badly - rough surfaces, popping and weak layers. Store the spool sealed with desiccant between uses, and expect trouble if it has been left open in a humid room.

- Functional mechanical parts in engineering and TAFE programmes
- Gears, hinges and living joints that need to flex without cracking
- Parts that will see wear, friction or repeated handling
For general classroom printing, PLA is easier and cheaper. Reach for nylon when a part has to survive being used rather than looked at.
