UltiMaker PETG sits between PLA and the engineering materials. It handles heat and moisture better than PLA and is tougher without being difficult to print, which makes it the sensible choice for parts that have to do a job rather than sit on a shelf - jigs, fixtures, brackets, or anything that will live outdoors or near a window.
Specifications:
- 750g spool
- 2.85mm diameter - for UltiMaker S series printers
- Eleven colours: grey, green, blue, red, orange, yellow and transparent, plus blue, red and green translucent and fluorescent yellow
- Print profiles built into UltiMaker Cura
Check your printer takes 2.85mm. UltiMaker S series printers use 2.85mm filament. Most other desktop printers, including FlashForge and the MakerBot SKETCH range, take 1.75mm and this spool will not fit them.
PETG or PLA?
- PETG for parts that need to resist heat, moisture or repeated handling, and for anything going outside
- PLA for prototypes, models and general student work - easier to print and cheaper per spool
- PETG prints a little slower and needs a slightly hotter nozzle, but no special ventilation
The translucent and fluorescent colours are worth knowing about for teaching: a translucent print lets students see the internal geometry and infill, which makes a slicing lesson much easier to explain.
