Description

The MakerBot SKETCH Sprint is built for one specific classroom problem: a 3D print that doesn't finish inside the lesson. It runs at up to 300mm/s, around five times a standard desktop printer, so a student can design something in period three and hold it in period four. That changes 3D printing from a demonstration into something a class actually iterates on.

Key specifications:

  • Build volume 220 x 220 x 220mm
  • Print speeds up to 300mm/s, travel speeds up to 600mm/s
  • 0.4mm nozzle
  • Heated, removable flexible build plate to 110°C — bend it and the part pops off
  • Mesh levelling and live Z-adjustment, plus vibration compensation for high-speed printing
  • Fully enclosed, with an integrated HEPA and carbon filtration system
  • Built-in camera for monitoring a print remotely
  • Enclosed spool storage
  • Wi-Fi and USB, with UltiMaker Cura and Digital Factory for slicing and print management

Built for a school, not adapted for one:

  • UL 2904 listed. Independently verified against the standard for particle and chemical emissions from 3D printers — the certification a WHS officer or procurement team will ask for before a printer goes into an occupied classroom.
  • Digital PIN lock to prevent unauthorised use outside class time.
  • PLA and Tough PLA only. A deliberate limit: these are the materials that print safely in a room full of students, and the machine isn't pretending to handle ABS or nylon.
  • No rafts needed — parts adhere to the heated plate directly, which cuts print time and wasted filament.

What comes with it beyond the hardware: UltiMaker supply over 600 lesson plans and project ideas, ISTE-aligned training, MakerBot Certification for teachers and students, and curriculum development courses. Digital Factory lets a teacher manage several printers, queue jobs and accept student submissions from any device. For most schools this is the part that decides whether a printer gets used or gathers dust.

How it compares to our other printers: the FlashForge range costs considerably less and covers general classroom printing well, but has no UL 2904 certificate and no teaching resources behind it. Our UltiMaker S series handles engineering materials and dual extrusion for senior and TAFE work, but is a different class of machine and price. The SKETCH Sprint sits between them: the option for a school committing to a 3D printing programme that has to satisfy a compliance requirement.
